Take care of your feet naturally
Now that summer is here and we are starting to wear flip-flops, some of us encounter the bitter, yellow surprise of having athlete's foot, tinea pedis, or as they are more commonly called, fungus.
They can appear between the toes (interdigital tinea) or on the soles of the feet, the heels, or the sides (hyperkeratotic tinea).
If you want to apply a natural treatment to eliminate this fungus that is an alternative to chemical antifungals, take note of these medicinal plants that have antifungal, antibacterial, and, in some cases, anti-inflammatory properties.
These plants include onion, garlic, Ceylon cinnamon, tea tree oil, lemongrass, and our prized thyme.
We have provided a summary table with the specific action of each plant and how you can prepare them to treat different types of foot fungus:
| Medicinal plant | Action | Preparation |
| Garlic (extracts) | Antifungal and antibacterial | Crush a couple of cloves of garlic and spread them on sterile gauze. Apply this poultice to the skin (provided you do not have sensitive skin). |
| Onion (extracts) | Antifungal and antibacterial | Crush an onion and apply to the affected area as a poultice 2-3 times a day. |
| Tea Tree (essential oil) | Antibacterial, antiviral (herpes simplex), and antifungal. | Diluted in almond oil, we can apply it 2-3 times a day to the skin rash. |
| Ceylon Cinnamon (essential oil) | Fungistatic and antibacterial. | Diluted in almond oil, we can apply it 2-3 times a day to the skin rash. |
| Clove (essential oil) | Antiseptic, antiviral, and antifungal. | Diluted in almond oil, we can apply it 2-3 times a day to the skin rash. |
| Lemongrass (essential oil) | Antifungal | Diluted in almond oil, we can apply it 2-3 times a day to the skin rash. |
| Thyme (essential oil) | Antibacterial and antifungal. | Diluted in almond oil, we can apply it 2-3 times a day to the skin rash. |
In addition to using these medicinal plants separately, we can also combine them to enhance their properties by preparing creams or emulsions, which should be applied 2 to 3 times a day after cleaning and thoroughly drying the skin.
A fairly effective natural remedy is to wash your feet with apple cider vinegar every night, allowing the vinegar to dry on the feet. If you find it stings too much, you can dilute it with a little water.
Here is an apple cider vinegar recipe for treating ringworm or athlete's foot:
- 1/2 liter of apple cider vinegar
- 2 cloves of garlic
- 1 lemon
- 100ml water
- Tea tree oil (5 drops of essential oil).
Preparation method: Peel two cloves of garlic and bring to a boil for 2-3 minutes. Strain the infusion and let it cool. Add the juice of one lemon, the apple cider vinegar, and 5 drops of tea tree oil. Then, wash your feet with the mixture and let them air dry. Repeat this ritual every night.
