The "eco" concept has also reached the tourism industry. Environmental responsibility should not be forgotten on vacation; therefore, there are already accommodations and travel agencies whose greatest value is offering sustainable tourism, which is nothing more than being respectful of the environment in every possible facet.
But this concept is not new; The World Tourism Organization established an Environmental Committee back in 1978 dedicated to ensuring sustainable tourism. This Organization is an international body created in '75 whose purpose is to promote tourism. The definition of sustainable tourism according to the UNWTO is: "Tourism that takes full account of its current and future economic, social and environmental impacts, addressing the needs of visitors, the industry, the environment and host communities."
Therefore, tourism sustainability consists of taking into account the environmental, economic, and socio-cultural consequences that your visit will generate. An ecotourist commits to respecting and promoting respect for the region they visit in such a way that it guarantees the conservation of resources and the well-being of its inhabitants.
And you? Do you practice ecotourism?
Some essential habits for a sustainable vacation:
- Respect natural spaces as much as possible, trying to cause the least impact possible. Follow the rules of protected areas, always try to follow the trails without straying from them, do not make noise, and do not disturb animals and plants.
- Choose committed tourism companies that offer guarantees of respect for the environment and human rights. Do a little research before hiring any service.
- If you recycle all year round, are concerned about pollution, and save water and energy... why not keep doing it on vacation? Don't overdo the air conditioning in hotels, try to use public transport or non-polluting transport, and do not waste resources, such as water or electricity. Reduce waste generation as much as possible and, of course, dispose of it in the cleanest way possible.
- Use services managed by the local population and buy their products. Truly get to know the place you are visiting and the people who inhabit it, favoring the local economy and respecting their culture.
What benefits does the fact that this “healthy tourism” is in fashion bring?
- Environmental benefits: it favors the conservation of ecosystems, fights against pollution, and raises awareness about the fight for the environment.
- Cultural benefits: It respects the socio-cultural authenticity of local communities and promotes intercultural tolerance.
- Social benefits: It integrates local communities with tourism activities, which is enriching for everyone. It reactivates rural areas and promotes the improvement of infrastructure.
Whether you have already returned from your vacation or are about to start it, at Herbera we encourage you to reflect and to practice responsibility while on vacation as well. Let’s be consistent all year round.
