We have spent a long time studying how the skin works and treating issues such as dryness or dehydration, acne, or rosacea, and very little time focusing on the skin microbiome.
When we talk about the skin microbiota, we are referring to the set of microorganisms that inhabit the skin's surface. These include bacteria, fungi, viruses, and other microbes that live in balance on our skin. The microbiome defines this entire collection, its genes, its metabolites or waste products, and how they interact with the skin.
The skin microbiota plays a crucial role in protecting against external pathogens, regulating skin pH, and maintaining the skin barrier. Furthermore, this microbiota influences the skin's immune response, helping to prevent infections and maintain skin health.
Each person has a unique microbiota, influenced by factors such as age, genetics, hygiene, environment, and the use of skincare products. An imbalance in this microbiota can contribute to skin problems, such as acne, dermatitis, and other inflammatory conditions.
That is why we should keep it very much in mind when using products in our routines: they should respect the skin's natural microbiome.

Do you know which natural ingredients are ideal for caring for the skin microbiota?
Azelaic acid
Azelaic acid is one of our favorite natural ingredients; it is recommended for treating skin that is acne-prone, or presents with rosacea or inflammation.
It has proven efficacy in reducing the amount of bacteria that cause acne (Cutibacterium acnes) and also in controlling the population of the Demodex mite, which is responsible for rosacea. This direct action on the microbiome is what makes it such an interesting ingredient for treating the skin.
You will find it in our acne and rosacea treatment serum BIO SERUM AZELAIC TREATMENT.
Leucidal® Liquid
In formulation, sometimes instead of using "loose" ingredients, standardized and registered complexes or extracts are used. You can find it in the INCI (the list of ingredients) as Leuconostoc/Radish Root Ferment Filtrate.
It is an antimicrobial peptide derived from lactic acid from kimchi fermentation, a Korean recipe for fermented cabbage.
The interesting thing about this ingredient is that it helps us maintain the skin's acidic environment so that "good" bacteria can thrive and, in turn, prevent the not-so-good ones from having a hospitable environment.
We include it in a cream that is ideal for rosacea and for sensitive skin, the PROBIOTIC THERAPY.
Leucidal® SF Complete
We are looking at another complex similar to the previous one (and also one of our favorites). It is a preparation obtained from the fermentation of coconut with lactobacillus (the same bacteria used to make yogurt). Its INCI is Lactobacillus Ferment & Lactobacillus & Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Fruit Extract and they are antimicrobial peptides, which are key to maintaining a healthy and balanced skin barrier. They are also hydrating and conditioning, an excellent weapon for improving irritation, and for soothing and repairing the skin, which especially helps damaged or sensitive skin. But not only that; by improving the skin's ecosystem, it also improves its oxygenation, which would increase the production of collagen and elastin.
You will find it in our BB CREAM, in EYE CONTOUR, REISHI MICELLAR CLEANSING, and BIO SERUM AZELAIC TREATMENT.
Alpaflor® - Alp-Sebum CB or willowherb
Willowherb (genus Epilobium), also known as fireweed, moderates sebum production and regulates key bacteria in acne and rosacea in all facial areas, restoring the skin's healthy appearance. This bioactive ingredient is COSMOS, NATRUE organic certified, and fair trade. You can read more detailed information about willowherb in this article.
You will find it in the acne and rosacea treatment serum BIO SERUM AZELAIC TREATMENT and also in the toner for sensitive skin ECHINACEA & CAMOMILE REPAIRING MIST.
What else can you do to maintain the balance of your skin's microbiome?
Caring for the skin microbiota is essential for maintaining healthy and balanced skin. We give you 7 tips to care for and preserve the skin microbiota:
- Perform a gentle cleanse of your face at least once a day. Avoid products that are harsh; they not only remove dirt but also the bacteria that are beneficial to the skin.
- Keep skin hydrated: Well-hydrated skin supports a balanced microbiome. Use creams and lotions that help retain moisture, preferably without artificial fragrances or dyes.
- Protect your skin from the sun: the sun alters the skin by generating free radicals, and also by altering its barrier function.
- Avoid showers that are too hot or prolonged: Keep showers short and use lukewarm water: Hot water and long baths can strip the skin of its natural oils, negatively affecting the microbiome.
- Maintain a balanced diet: A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, fiber, and fermented foods like yogurt and kefir (which also have vegan options) can support both the gut and skin microbiome.
- Keep stress at bay: Chronic stress can negatively affect both the gut and skin microbiome. Practicing stress management techniques, such as meditation and regular exercise, can be beneficial.
- Consider probiotic supplements: In some cases, a healthcare professional may recommend probiotic supplements that could benefit both the gut and skin microbiome.
